The East End of Long Island, New York is home to the Peconic Estuary - a magnificent ecosystem that's been designated by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an "Estuary of National Significance." The Peconic Estuary Program (PEP) is the managing body charged with protecting and restoring this national, natural treasure.

"Paddle the River" 2009 in search of invasive Ludwigia Since the initiation of the eradication effort in the Spring of 2006, over 350 volunteers have spent over 1500 hours hand-pulling over 126 cubic yards of Ludwigia. Frequent monitoring suggests past and current efforts have been successful in controlling the invasive plant and project partners are hopeful that only small scale maintenance pulling will be required in the future.

After 3 years of intense volunteer efforts, we have successfully contained the invasion! Please join the Peconic Estuary Program and partners as we paddle approximately 4 miles of the Peconic River in search of any small remaining patches of Ludwigia and enjoy the resource and habitat we restored!
